Mussoorie was founded by Irish man Lt. Frederick Young (1786 to 1874 ) of East India Company. Lt. Young came to these hills for the sole purpose of bagging some game. He liked this place so much he stated a hunting lodge (shooting box) here, later he raised the Gurkha Regiments here. He was also the first to plant the potatoes in the valley here. His tenure here ended in 1844 and there are no memorials for him except a road named after him in Dehradun town. Lots of people visit this hill station and other adjacent places during the summer season when it will be horribly hot. Particularly people from Delhi and other places turn to the cool places of the Garhwal Himalayan ranges for fun, relaxation and to be free from summer heat and hot wind.

Oak Grove School, yet another old school, differs from the other notable institutions of Mussoorie for two reasons. First, it is affiliated with the CBSE, New Delhi, which is a rarity among the residential schools of Mussoorie. Second, it is a secular government-aided school, run by the Northern Railways. The school was founded in 1888 by the East Indian Railway (EIR) and passed to the Indian Railways when railways were nationalized after Independence. Since then, it has been managed by a board, comprising of members of the Indian Railways.
