Erected by in 1599 in Velha Goa or Old Goa 20 km from the Capital City of Panjim, by Viceroy Francisco da Gama, the then Viceroy of Goa and great-grandson of the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama the Viceroy's arch is a tribute to a man who revolutionized sea-faring by his time-honored first discovery of a major sea route to India. Goa is on the west coast of India.

This fine legacy of colonial Portuguese rule under went renovation in 1954 and prior to it it was in a dilapidated condition facing near collapse. The reason is soon after the liberation of Goa from the Portuguese in 1954 this place including the historical arch fell into disuse with no periodic repairs and maintenance

Now it is an ASI protected Monument of National. Standing as a sentinel this tall arch the Mandovi River, beyond the Se Cathedral bear testimony to the heyday of Portuguese rulers and their hegemony in this par of India.
