Darjeeling Municipality stands as a remarkable example of colonial architecture in the heart of West Bengal’s celebrated hill town. Built during the British Raj, the building reflects the grandeur and sophistication characteristic of the colonial era. Its elegant façade features gracefully arched windows, intricately carved stone columns, and detailed cornices that echo European design principles while incorporating indigenous craftsmanship. The structure’s high ceilings, spacious halls, and wide verandahs were thoughtfully designed to suit the cool, temperate climate of the hills, providing both practicality and an enduring aesthetic appeal.
Constructed in 1850 by the late Raj Sahib Kharga Bahadur Chettri, who also constructed most of the iconic structures in town, the municipality building at first but later it turned into the capital hall due to a shortage of facilities to conduct meetings, banquets and other events. In the year 1921 , Two Lakh Fifty Thousand of Rupees was donated by the Maharaja of Coach Behar (Cooch Bihar) for the complete construction of this Hall. This is one of the must-visit heritage sites in Darjeeling.
Local artisans contributed to the embellishments, blending British engineering with traditional design elements unique to the region. Over the decades, careful restoration efforts have preserved its original splendor, ensuring that the building remains a living testament to the town’s historical legacy. Today, this iconic edifice not only serves as the administrative heart of Darjeeling but also as a cultural landmark, drawing admiration from historians, architects, and visitors alike for its timeless elegance and storied past. Its colonial charm continues to inspire future generations of citizens.
