Loreto Convent, Darjeeling, is a renowned English-medium girls' school established in 1846 by a group of Loreto Sisters during the early British rule under the East India company Their aim was to impart quality education to the students for better future.. One of the oldest schools in the region it is is affiliated with the ICSE and ISC boards. The school was founded with the support of Archbishop Dr. Carew of Calcutta, and the first residence was at “Snowy View” before moving to the current convent building in 1847. Though the sisters continued their work of education under Bishop Carew. in 1848 they were brought under the Vicariate of Patna and Bishop Hartman. After April, 1848 Loreto Convent ceased to be connected with the parent house in Calcutta and thus entered a new phase. But this lasted till 1881.

Initially, the school had only two students, but by the Golden Jubilee in 1896, enrollment had grown to 173. It became known for providing holistic education, excelling in English, French, music, and drawing. The school also housed an orphanage for soldiers' children until 1887. During World War II, the Novitiate building served as a refuge for soldiers and nurses under the leadership of Mother Antoinette.
The school introduced the Cambridge examinations in 1905, with its first students successfully passing. Over time, facilities expanded, including a concert hall (1903), dining rooms, a skating rink, and the Lytton Hospital. By 1917, the number of boarders had risen to 117. However, the hostel was shut down in 1988 due to political agitation in Darjeeling.

Today, Loreto Convent is a neighborhood school with around 1,600 students from diverse backgrounds, continuing its legacy of quality education. Notable alumni include freedom fighter and philosopher Sri Aurobindo, Oscar-winning actress Vivien Leigh, and Leila Seth, India’s first female Chief Justice of a state.
To preserve the peace, heritage and and the ambiance of the campus, there was protest in 2024 to construct concrete structures within the campus
