Madras city has several old schools founded in the colonial period. Of particular interest to us is the Secret Heart Higher Mat. School, Chennai. Unlike many schools, this one was founded by dedicated Christian women of Irish origin. The credit goes to Sister Nano Nagle who valued education and its major role in community development. In this respect, this old school that came up in the early part of 20th century , is a unique one.

Any nation's progress is dependent upon  the quality of education the institutions offer to the students  and it will help them build a strong nation with good progress in every sphere. So, education directly promotes prosperity and welfare of the nation  and its role in a society is quite indispensable. Education should benefit not only the rich and but also the poor and underprivileged people. With these ideals in mind an Irish woman  by the name of Nano Nagle from Cork, Ireland had formed '' The Congregation Of Presentation Sisters''in 1775. The sisters from the society came to Chennai (Madras) in 1842 to help the Angelo-Indian community in George Town (earlier called Black Town). Initially they were with St.Ursula' Angelo Indian School which, in 1904, acquired the present Church Park land. The sisters wanted to start a new school and  the foundation stone was laid in 1908. Sacred Heart High School, Church Park began to function. In 1910 it received recognition as  a Middle School  under the European Code to work under the Madras Education Rules as an Indian School with just 137 students to spread the ideals of Sis. Nano. In 1952, the school was  affiliated to the University of Madras  and in 1954, it became a private matriculation school.   The first batch wrote the Matriculation Examination conducted by the Madras University in 1954. Though initially, the school catered to the need of the elite society, the policy of the school changed to help the students discover their role in the society  and how important for them to maintain their individuality and dignity and play a key role in community development.  The need arose to reach out to the under privileged classes, so the Sisters of Church Park started Sacred Heart Tamil Medium School in 1980 with 36 pupils and now, the strength has gone over  600 students and a separate building was built to take care of additional needs. In tune with the true spirit of Nano Nagle, the school offers Community Development  Courses with a view to reaching out to the poor to  imbibe dignity and responsibility as part of growth of society relevant to modern technology and transformation.

Be yourself:

Never ever compromise on your ideals and goals for the sake of others who are not going to stick around with you till you hit the grave and they' ll  just get off your path midway. Your self-esteem and dignity should not be the casualty for the sake of some people who are like buddies on a train.

Chose right friends:

That men are molded by the environment in which they are living is true. So, it is to be borne in mind that if you are surrounded by sincere and dedicated people who care for you, love  you

Amorous eyes:

They never fail to haunt the weak-minded men irrespective of age.  Blinded by reasoning, men with amorous eyes lack shame, pride, self-respect and discretionary power. If unchecked, it will push them into the elephant pit. At stake will be their honor and dignity.

In a just all-men company when the performance of the employees is not up to the mark and productivity is down,  some employers 've  followed a new technique. What they've  done is they 've employed a bevy of bewitching beauties to  take care of the office work and board meetings. Their impression is the ladies' presence will act like a catalyst and the employees will  vie with one another to complete the assignment given to them  on time and this may leave a good impression on the  fair-skinned ladies. What has happened  in the wake of it is  it is just opposite. Record show  100% attendance, 100% no loitering and no slack of work, most importantly, their morale goes to higher level, but unfortunately, though the productivity is up, efficiency is way down. In a 'pep talk' before a group of employers,  a man was comparing a successful man's leadership with an ice-berg.  People in the audience were wondering about comparing a  man's success with an iceberg that floats in the ocean and is prone to partial melting in the summer .  He said, '' When we look at the successful people only their 'success is visible' to us just like the upper part of an  iceberg above the ocean. Here it is peak of the 'Iceberg leadership' What is hidden or not visible behind them is a lot of stuff such as toil, commitment, focus and dedication on one hand and a series of setbacks, resilience and persistence on the other. Hard work is fundamental to success. It is no use just analyzing the peak of  the iceberg and what we need to do is we've to find out what is underneath of iceberg and make sure there is enough to keep to iceberg stay afloat. The Church of St. Lawrence Sinquerim, GoaYouTube

St. Lawrence Church - Agassaim  Trawell.
It was Count of Linhares, Viceroy Dom Miguel de Noronha who founded  in 1630  ''The  Church of  St. Lawrence'' in Sinquerim, Goa, West India.  This work was undertaken by him upon completion of the fort work. Since Portuguese had tough competitors near-by, security of their settlement was important, hence priority was given to the fort first.

Also known as  ‘Sao Lourence Igreja em  Sinquerim, Goa’ in Portuguese, the  St. Lawrence Church, Sinquerim, Goa has another local name -‘The Sinquerim Church’. The Franciscans in 1636 took over the church from the Portuguese head and in 1638 it became a Parish, separate from  the Parish of Candolim. Soon after the exit of  the Franciscans in 1776 for unknown reasons, the management of the Parish  and the hospice  there became the responsibility of  the Diocesan clergy; they began to  take over the pastoral care of the parish.

The Church is located in a serene, picturesque place, over-looking the Arabian sea  and is at a short distance from the famous Sinquerim fort.  Located at a distance of 5 km from Candolim Beach along the Fort Aguada Road (1.4 kms),  this Church is dedicated to St. Lawrence, the Martyr or controller of winds, a patron saint of sailorsa and he is holding a boat in one hand, symbolic of protecting the sailors at sea. The dedication of this church to the patron saint of Sailorsa  in this part of Goa  is quite appropriate as during the severe SW Monsoon lasting roughly 2 to 3 months  the rough Arabian sea and the heavy gales were a menace to the sailors then and they trusted the saint  for their safety.
The Church of St. Lawrence  Goa JoeGoaUk - GOA - Blogger
The church  has  an enormous sheltered yard and has a plain triangular  peak right above the first floor in the facade. Anote worthy feature is Palacio Ajuda, a massive structure built by Jimmy Gazdar can be seen outside the chapel gate.
There is  a solitary round window in the middle. Behind the Triangular outline on either  side there are  two  thin towers.  The dome shaped church houses some wonderful structures of the risen Jesus Christ with his legion of angels. Being a small church, it has limited seating capacity and occasionally arrangements are made in the yard for additional worshipers. The columns are nicely adorned with  engravings depicting certain important life episodes of St. Lawrence.   The paneled vaulting inside the church  is stunningly beautiful and impressive;  the risers of the steps of the sacrificial stone have alluring blue and white tiles. The main altar has a wooden cross in the center and a statue of St. Lawrence to the right.

Towards the end of the Monsoon season, the celebration of St. Lawrence is held every year to praise the lord for guarding the seafarers /sailors and it will coincide with the end of terrible rainy season  on the west coast of India. It means the ocean and water ways are safe enough for the boats and ships to sail. In past, the actual cutting of a rope extended over the stream symbolized the festival of the celebration. On the 10th of August every year, The Feast is held and is being attended by the patrons. The feat marks the  reopening of the sandbars in the Mandovi river to river traffic and the end of the monsoon. The feast day usually coincides with Narali Purnima.Since  June, 1991, the Sinquerim parish has been under the control of  the members of the Order of the Friars Minor Capuchin’s.

Samuel Stokes who fought for India's freedom - first American arrested by the British

Samuel Stokes. annithisweek.blogspot.com
When I read about an American, a Quaker from Philadelphia  who was the only non-Indian  to sign the Congress (AICC) manifesto in 1921, calling upon Indians to quit government service, I was in for a surprise. An American from a far-off continent taking an active  role in  Indian Freedom Struggle and jailed for  participating in India’s freedom struggle? I could not believe it. When I came to know that  he almost single-handedly turned Himachal Pradesh into a major  apple producing state of India by bringing commercially productive and quality apple plants for this sub-Himalayan region, I was literally bowled  out and decided to know more about this maverick who made a niche for himself in the'History of India'freedom struggle.
Being from Tamil Nadu, I bet, countless people including me have not heard about American Stokes' participation in freedom struggle, his protest against importation of  British goods and  his close contact with Gandhiji. Nor am I aware of his multi-faceted personality, social activities like rehabilitation of lepers, introduction of new agricultural techniques and apple and other  plants suitable to the climate of that region.

His Indianised  name is  'Satyanand' Stokes'  alias  Samuel Evans Stokes (16 August 1882 – 14 May 1946), born and raised in Philadelphia, Penn, USA and his father was a successful businessman, making quality elevators (lifts). Aged 22 he left for India on 9 January  1904 on missionary work,  much to the dismay of his family who wanted him to look after the family business. He set his goal on something that would keep  him happy  and lead a contended life - an unexpected long journey that was going to get the best qualities out of him.  At Subbathu, Shimla  (now the capital of HM) Stokes worked at the leper colony run by  Dr Marcus Carleton and took care of their needs, including their emotion feeling of rejection by the society.  Serving the poor and derelict appealed to his heart and soul and to serve them better,he had begun to learn a working knowledge of Hindi (local language) to deal with the natives and he was of great help to Dr. Carleton in his rehabilitation work. Doing a pious job quietly,  he earned the trust of the local people who developed high regards for him.  Being a Quaker, he took keen interest in spirituality and asceticism, finding satisfaction in simple life in a serene place like a Hindu hermit.  Leading a simple life among the villagers at Subbathu in the foot hills of picturesque Himalayas gave him happiness and satisfaction.
Quora

A visit by the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Leper colony encouraged him to form an order of monk wood to serve the poor and needy. However,  after a couple of years, he withdrew his activities. As for his parents, they were quite happy that their son was held in great esteem in that part of India, doing a noble job and his real satisfaction in his social and community work.  To be identified with Indian people, he married a Rajput girl (named her Agnes) from a Christian family and she bore him five children. He was not happy the way the Christian missionaries were operating in India as they based their approach on western system and failed to teach religion and education in the context of Indian tradition and ethos. In this respect he was quite disillusioned.

He developed lofty  ideals and took keen interest in humanism and equality of men, This led him  to change his traditional western habits and began to take Indian  food and followed the Indian customs.
The 1905 earthquake in Kangra saw Stokes in the peak of his social activities and helped the earthquake victims as much as he could. Refusing govt funds, he  used his own savings for the humanitarian   purposes. The rigor of toil and commitment to help the earthquake victims affected his health very much. After fully recovered, he stayed on in India  and was helping Dr. Carleton at the leper colony.  Upon his advice, he chose a village  called  Kotgarh on the Hindustan-Tibet road, 50 miles from Shimla; being not motorable he reached the beautiful place on  foot to serve the local hilly people. Their abject poverty bothered him and thi led him to form apple orchards in that region for their livelihood.

American Stokes and others sachi.org
However, with his family's money he purchased lands there  and settled on a quiet life with his family.  Despite being a member of a rich American business family, the materialistic life did not attract him. With a spiritual bend of mind he  became a Sadhu in a Hindu sense  and won the heart of villagers,  including those who mistook him for a Christian missionary in the garb of  an Indian saint. Being a man of charitable disposition,  using his money he helped the local people a lot. Stokes did not like the oppressive rule of the British and the treatment of Indian hill tribes and their age old practices. Already disheartened by the massacre at Jallianwala Bagh (April 1913) Stokes found the approach of the British toward hill tribes  unjust, exploitative and inhuman. He  asked the tribes  to suspend all kar and begar to the government and to the state. Realizing Free India is the only solution for the natives, inspired by Gandhi and other leaders,  he soon got involved in India’s freedom struggle. In the wake of  the Congress special session in 1920 at Calcutta, Stokes penned   a series of articles in the Bombay Chronicle entitled "A Study in Non-cooperation". He, without hesitation, became first American to declare, "(our) Ultimate goal must be absolute swaraj..."  Naturally, Stokes won the admiration of Indian national leaders and he became a full-fledged delegate from Kotgarh to the All India Congress Committee(AICC) which met at Nagpur in 1920.

Soon Stokes plunged into freedom activities, giving full support to Indian aspirations, he earned the wreath of the British.  Despite warning by the govt. (31July 1921) discouraging foreigner's participation in agitation against the government, Stokes along with a British nurse attended a bonfire of imported clothes. Gandhiji and other leaders wanted Indians to wear Swadesi (home-made) clothes, not foreign clothes. Since then he had begun to wear Khadi (hand-spun cloth from cotton promoted by Gandhiji). One sterling trait Stokes possessed was his trust in his ideology, thus maintaining individuality. On a few occasions when he met Gandhiji on certain issues he was at variance with him, but his respect for his ideals and political thinking had never changed. He lived at Sabarmati Ashram (now in Gujarat) for a while and accompanied Gandhji on some occasions.

Prince of Wales on a visit to Patiala, Punjab India, 1922 Mid-Day
When the Prince of Wales  was on his visit in November 1921 in Lahore, Punjab there was widespread protest and Stokes  was an active participant along with other leaders like  Lala Lajpat Rai. He told the Indian leaders that 'the British prince  was not your prince' and  according reception to him by a section of Indian leaders is not right. Stokes was the first PPCC member  and to be detained on December 3 under Section 108 of the CrPC, thus becoming the only American   in history to become a political prisoner of Great Britain in the freedom struggle in Colonial India.
Stokes’ trial evoked considerable interest in the media  and was well covered in great detail by The Tribune . When Stokes   was jailed for six months,  The Tribune commented  ''a grievous failure of justice". Equally furious and critical was Gandhi who wrote,  "That he (Stokes) should feel with and like an Indian, share his sorrows and throw himself into the struggle, has proved too much for the government. To leave him free to criticize the government was intolerable, so his white skin has proved no protection for him…"
Roughly nine months before India's independence in August 1947, Stokes died on 14 May 1946 owing to extended illness.  That  Satyanand Stokes's name is not in the list of many freedom fighters  at a time when India was  celebrating the golden jubilee of our Constitution is  highly deplorable. It may be counted as an act of pure negligence on the part of Congress leaders who overlooked this great man's participation in freedom movement. However, we get a feeling of elation that  Samuel Stokes, through his selfless and sincere services to the people of his region, has touched the soul and heart of the people there, thus establishing himself as a true Karmayogi - neither expecting accolades from his followers nor an award from the Indian government.  Hailing from a rich American family, he could have chosen a cozy and comfortable life; but he preferred a simple non-materialistic life that made him happy. Indeed, a great man with real American spirits, upholding the virtues of people like Abe Lincoln, John Kennedy, Martin Luther King and a host of others.

Above image: Born Samuel Evans Stokes, this "American in Khadi", a freedom fighter for India in colonial India and jailed for six months by the British, transformed the economy of the tiny hill state by planting apple trees with better yield.

Satyanand Stokes ( Samerl Evans Stokes), an American from the rich Quaker family of Philadelphia, besides being a staunch freedom fighter for India and a close follower of Gandhiji during the colonial period, was instrumental in introducing apple cultivation of better varieties in  the region what is now known as Himachal Pradesh.  Though apple cultivation had been there in the region for a long time, he promoted certain varieties of apple trees  and made apple production commercially viable and profitable. By doing so, he helped the small farmers in that region earn income to stand up on their own. The poverty of the people in that region so bad he wanted to do something to get rid of it. The removal of poverty considerably in the local community became his priority and his firm determination helped him a lot. Stokes revolutionized apple production in Himachal Pradesh by  bringing quality apples with better yield.

Apple orchards were first established in Kotgarh and Kullu  and Stokes  Chose Dhana Dhar Kotgarh area better suitable for the growth of large number of trees.  He also imported different apple varieties  suitable to that region and made a new approach to their cultivation.  Some British variety of apples  already growing in the region  were neither good in taste nor were  popular. The first apple tree in this country was planted by  one Capt. R.C. Lee of the British army in the Kullu valley in 1870.The apples he planted were the Newton Pippins,  King of Pippin and the Cox s Orange Pippin, but unfortunately their sour and tangy taste discouraged the Indian farmers and they did not go for the cultivation of these English varieties.

So, choosing  a new strain of apples  suitable to this region that  would be commercially successful became his first step. On a visit to to Philadelphia in 1914,  he surveyed the  apple plants growing  there  and he brought some apple cuttings with him on his return which he planted near his house.  To follow it through in the next couple of years or more, he tried as many as 33 varieties of apples to determine which would be most suitable for the area. Finally, the choice fell on  the American Delicious variety which had a name in the US. It was quite popular in the NW State of Washington.  Incidentally, when the delicious saplings from Washington state arrived  here, Mrs Agnes received it and plated the saplings on their land as Stokes was jailed in 1921 by the British for his  protest against the visit of Prince of Wales in Punjab. Later, Upon satisfied with the results of the new variety on his own land,  he advised others to try the variety.

The crux of his problem was convincing the local farmers to switch over to apple trees and further  their response was very discouraging because of long gestation period. He gave them free saplings and patiently convinced them once the apple trees started bearing fruit, there would be  no additional seasonal work. The tree would keep bearing fruits seasonally. At last, the farmers became convinced about planting apple trees in their land.  The rest is history!

Samuel, having done  considerable research on apple trees and their suitability to his farm lands he himself  improved, the farmland he had purchased. His work in 1916, led him to conclude that the   a new strain of apples developed by the Stark brothers of Louisiana, USA  would be an ideal choice for the the Shimla Hills and began cultivating them on his farm. His efforts were successful  resulting bumper crops, beefed-up by Samuel's contact with the white people who ran the export business in Delhi. This  encouraged the other farmers to follow suit and  Samuel guided in very conceivable way. He bought more lands with a view to  growing apple cultivars which the villagers would use to seed their own farms. Stokes, as well planned improved the  quality of life of the farmers and their overall cooperation and efforts gave a boost to the local economy.  Unfortunately, outside Himachal Pradesh, not many people are  aware of the legacy of this great man, who has been rightly bestowed with the title of The Economic Emancipator of The Hills.

Tit-bits:
01. It was only after 1950 that apple production gained momentum. In 1950, 712 hectares of land were under apple production but, now 1.3 lakh hectares are under apple production in the form of big orchards in Himachal with Shimla district accounting for major production.

02. The apple industry caters to 6 lakh apple growers in 10 districts accounting for produces worth more than  Rs. 2500 crores.

03. Kinnauri apple is famous globally because of its quality.

04. Because of global warming and its impact on  production the apple belt is shifting to upper areas in Kullu Valley with tribal people in Lahaul & Spiti districts.

Brigadier-General John Nicholson CB (11 December 1821- 23 September 1857), a Victorian Era military officer  under Henry Lawrence courageously fought during wars in the frontier provinces (now in Pakistan) and other places of the British Empire in India.  Being a good swordsman and military officer, his military acumen and  skill in negotiations were in full play in the settlement of the North-West Frontier  area. As for the Indian Mutiny of 1957, its impact on the early British rule  was a serious one, particularly the  Siege of Delhi. Brig. Gen. Nicholson  recaptured Delhi and   became the Victorian "Hero of Delhi". His  exploits  during the Mutiny became subjects of many literary works and  ballads, inspiring generations of young British  boys to join the army. With respect to Indian patriots, Brig. Gen. Nicholson was a  nasty military officer who treated the Indians badly, hence Indians hated him very much.

His end came in Delhi  on 23 September 1857in a cantonment Bungalow where  he was recuperating from severe wounds he received in the Delhi  siege.  He tried to break  the defences of rebels who kept  the walled city of Shahjahanabad under their control,  and  was shot at near the Lahore Gate. At the military camp it was a slow and painful death, medical treatment was of no avail. After knowing that Delhi had been recaptured by the British, he breathed his last. When he died, he  was  just 35 -

Nicholson Cemetery,  formerly known as the Old Delhi Military Cemetery  is  located in Kashmere Gate, Delhi, India.  The site  is believed to be the  earliest known Christian burials in Delhi NCR. Built in 1857 the cemetery is named after Brig-Gen. John Nicholson. An interesting fact is the cemetery belongs to The St. James' Church, one of  the oldest places of worship for the Christian community of Delhi. The Christian institutions - The church along with cemetery, St. Stephen's hostel, and the Victorian era houses of Kashmere Gate neighborhood once collectively called   "centripetal" part of Christians in Delhi.

A native of Ireland, John Nicholson, born on 11 December 1821 in Dublin, was educated at Dungannon. His maternal uncle, Sir James Weir Hogg,  arranged  a Cadetship for him in the Bengal Infantry and he saw his first duty  at Banaras,  and subsequently from 1839 till his death, he saw various duties and got a name for himself. It was in the Sepoy Mutiny during the siege of Delhi Sept, 1857), he played an exemplary role  that saw Delhi come under the British control.

The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began as a mutiny of sepoys of the East India Company's army on 10 May 1857, in the town of Meerut, soon gave rise to many rebellions at many northern towns. The chain of events in succession shook the British military and their morale was at the lowest. Brig. Gen. Nicholson, during the siege of Delhi at last came out victorious and this gave the British to  get back on their feet. On 14 September 1857,  when  Nicholson was leading the  storming party, he was shot in chest by a sepoy of rebellions. After a few days on 23 September, 1857 Nicholson  was succumbed to gunshot wounds.

The Siege of Delhi created a number of casualties and this created a demand for a Christian cemetery in the area. In front of the Kashmere Gate, near to Ludlow Castle a new burial ground came up to fulfil the burial needs. Nicholson was among the first people who were buried there.  His tombstone was built from the white marble slab taken  from the Red Fort and the  epitaph on it reads:   ''The grave of Brigadier General John Nicholson who led the assault of Delhi but fell in the hour of victory mortally wounded and died 23rd September 1857 aged 35''.

Among a million people, a fraction of them take to business as their carrier and only a small percentage of them slowly and steadily reach the summit and enjoy the thrill of having succeeded in their endeavor. While the rest, just like Marathon runners fall midway one by one after loosing their steam. Reason: Prospective entrepreneurs don not know their hidden skills and apply them collectively.

Regardless of your technical skill and knowledge in a specific field, there are certain common skills one ought to develop if his chosen field is business.  The age  old wheeze ''If there is a will, there is a way''  is quite applicable  here.

The following tips may be of some interest to you:

Develop vision:  Any work primarily needs a vision.Carefully decide what kind of business you want to do based on your technical skill  and  practical knowledge and try to visualize that one day you will accomplish your dream. Chase your dream with a mission and focus and never let your dream fade from your mind.

Develop goal: Any endeavor without a set of goals is useless.  There should be a definite goal in your mind and you should work towards achieving it.  Starting with small goals is a right move  at the outset. After tackling  and  achieving  small goals, move on to bigger goals and be ready to take on new challenges.

Be resolute: Success is not offered to you on a silver platter. Part of success is taking calculated risk and you can not skip it, Nor can you avoid it.  Bear in mind, don't be afraid to take certain risk within your limitation, in particular, when you face bigger goals and  new challenges. The crux of the matter is the risk factor must be manageable.

Develop Strategy: Strategy plays a key role in  scientific research and  wars between nations and running companies. Strategies is something like one of the rungs in the ladder. If you skip it to speed your goal, surely you will trip. So, chalking out business  strategies is a must to set path to achieve your goal. Strategies vary from the business to business. If one strategy does not work, keep trying other ways and shift your strategy and approach that may suit you the best. In this case you must develop the ability to adopt to changes and adopt  to new methods of working while keeping your vision in focus.

Be passionate: Passion is a driving force behind  successful young business people. If you lack passion, motivation is the casualty. Lise wisebeing over passionate is not good. Steadfast passion coupled with enthusiasm, planning and execution will keep you on the right path.

Communication skill:  Communication skill  does not mean you should be a good orator holding the audience spell-bound. It consists of  every form of  effective  communication such as  email, letter-writing and phone conversation. Clarity and ability to convince your ideas or or vision must be given priority.

Public relations: Successful business people  are good at public relations. Having or developing  lasting relationships with the right well-motivated people i an asset. Be active on the social circuit. Building good relationship with like minded people will help you succeed.

Be Persistent:  Be persistent on the same goal, but change tactics, if need be.

Be a learner:  Every day  you learn something new, not experienced before. As time changes, so does  new technique. Be conversant with the latest business management techniques  and new technology to help your business grow. Do not ever give room to complacency  that may set your business slide downhill.

Retention:  No matter how many customers you have, you must learn to retain them so that thy will become regular customers. Take their complaints seriously  and act accordingly and this way you can improve the customer service as well as the quality of your products. Giving small gifts or compliments  may be a good bet to retain them. This will impress on them that your company values their support.
Motivate Us
More retention means more exposure and better progress.

Besides above, do not take decision in haste that may cause grave mistake. You can not expect result overnight. So, be patient. Grab the opportunity and make the best out of it.

Based on motivational factors there are three types of managers:

 01. Affiliative Manager:He is more concerned about his personal  popularity rather than promoting his company's goal.

02. The intermediate group: Here the manager sets his  goals and try to achieve them. He gives priority to his achievement and recognition.

03.Institutional Managers: These people are interested in power. Their approach is only by way of influencing people around them  so that they can get things  done. They do not depend on their own individual  achievement.

In  any  team work  power of  motivation  is  very important  and  the  success  rate among the motivational people  is very high.

Researchers have pointed out individualshigh in power and in control  are more institution-minded.

For a  successful  manager  the following  motivational aspects are  noteworthy:
Alternion
 01. A manager should be motivated  by  personal power so that he can create greater team spirit.

 02. Managers motivated by personal power may lack discipline to build an institution. But their subordinates will be more loyal to them rather than to the institution.

03. Affiliative manger, who is on good terms with his subordinates is  useful to an organization in certain situations.  Affiliation alone won't work

04. Managerial style is  an important factor. That is expression of their power and approach in a democratic way,  not showing any partiality.

05.  A successful manager should have good work ethics that will keep morale of his subordinates high.

06. Another important matter is a manger should take more interest in the personal needs of his subordinates, rather than getting things done by his team. This will help develop  mutual respect between them.

07. In any matter  of  dispute  or  contradiction, a manager  should  have  fair  judgement. Giving a biased opinion in a simple conflict of interest in a team is either good for the team or for the organization.

08. Authoritative or coercive methods in dealing with team mates will not work and the result will be zilch.

09. Best managers possess two important traits that act as regulators -  greater emotional maturity where there is no room for egotism and secondly democratic coaching managerial skill.

10. So, for a good manager,  greater motivational power  than  affiliation and  inhibition is very important.

When managers approach their co-workers with a sense of understanding and  motivational power with out arrogance, definitely they can motive the workers to be more productive which is good for an upcoming corporation.

Lady Hardinge Medical College is a medical college for women.  Funded by the Government of India, it is one of the selected medical colleges globally meant exclusively for women.

Under the colonial rule when the national capital of India was shiftedfrom Calcutta  to Delhi in 1912, it dawned upon Lady Hardinge, the wife of the then Viceroy of India, Baron Charles Hardinge, to establish a medical college  and a hospital exclusively for women, as she recognized that  there was lack of such a college  where women could devout themselves to medical education  taught by women professionals to attend on women patients and further, she noticed,  very few women wanted to specialize in this profession that was dominated by men. Women with  gynaecological problems, etc had to approach male doctors for treatment  with reservation as  they were not at ease with them. It was proposed to have an institution to train women as nurses attached to the medical college as well as to the hospital.  The foundation stone was laid by Lady Hardinge on 17 March 1914, a few days before her departure for England where she died on 11 July 1914.  The college was named Queen Mary College & Hospital to commemorate the visit by Queen Mary in 1911-12.  The credit goes to Lady Hardinge , who herself was actively involved in collecting funds for the college from the princely states and the public. As for the Nursing College, the foundation stone was laid by lady Chelmford in Feb. 1916. Believed to the oldest nursing schools in Delhi, the services began with two English sisters. Now the college takes 60 plus students for various nursing courses.

Admission Jankari
The college was inaugurated on 7 February 1916 by Baron Hardinge in the Imperial Delhi Enclave area. He was quite emotional about his departed beloved wife and personally appealed to the senior officials and the affluent to come forward and make donation for the medical college  to fulfil Lady Hardinge's lofty ideals. On the suggestion of Queen Mary, the college and the hospital was named after Lady Hardinge. a lasting tribute to the  memory of its founder and her far-sighted vision. The first principal was Dr. Kate Platt and the college admitted 16 students. As the college was then affiliated to University of the Punjab, the students had to  go to go to  King Edward Medical College  for their final exams in Lahore. The college became affiliated to the University of Delhi in 1950 and post-graduate courses were started in 1954. Dr. Ruth Young CBE, who as Ruth Wilson was the first Professor of Surgery at the College, served as Principal from 1936 until 1940, In 1956 came up The Kalawati Saran Children's Hospital, one of the two hospitals attached to the Lady Hardinge Medical College.

In the beginning the medical college could take only 16 women students  and the MBBS courses lasted 7 long years. In the 1970s the institution admitted 100 to 130 students, presently it is around 200.  Initially, the college was an autonomous institution managed by a Governing Body. In the year 1953, the Board of Administration constituted by the Central Government took formal charge of the management of the institution. In February 1978, the management was taken over by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India under an Act of Parliament. One of the director professors is chosen as the president of the college, the most senior post in the college

The hospital has provided services to male patients since 1991.  Smt. Sucheta Kriplani Hospital and Kalawati Saran Child Hospital, have a capacity of 877 and 350 beds respectively. The college's Department of Microbiology is internationally well-known for its salmonella phage typing, and it is a World Health Organization collaborating centre for reference and training in streptococcal diseases for South East Asia  It is also a surveillance center for AIDS.

The vision of Lady Hardinge was as follows:  ''India's must pressing problem at present was  to secure a healthy and happy population. I regard this college as a pioneer institution which would ultimately lead to the wide diffusion of medical and sanitary knowledge by training Indian women of the proper class as doctors, health officers and nurses''.

The graduates from this institution are serving not only in India but also overseas. The college has a vast collection of books on medicine and related stuff. This college is 102 years old. Lady Hardinge was a true visionary.

Founder Christian Medical College, Vellore. youtube.com
Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder (December 9, 1870 – May 23, 1960)  was the founder of Chritian Medical College, vellore, TN and  her  parents were Dr. John Scudder Jr. and his wife, Sophia (née Weld). They were  part of a long line of medical missionaries in India. Being the  grand daughter of Rev. Dr. John Scudder Sr., as a child in India,  she witnessed the effects of  famine, poverty and disease in her place. She went to the USA to attend s seminary and later to get married and settled down there. But the providence had a different duty fixed for her and that  gave  her name and credit.
Twitter
In 1890, Ida visited a small town called Tindivanam (now Tamil Nadu) in Madras Presidency where her mother was ailing at the  mission Bungalow. Though Ida  did not want to become a  medical missionary, a gripping and tragic  experience in which three Muslim women, who had come to the mission for delivery  refused to be treated by male doctors, had changed her vision.  Later the three ladies death because of lack of lady doctors with knowledge of gynaecology or general medicine, besides   inadequacy of medical knowledge and facilities brought about a change in her persona.   Realizing India needs adequate lady doctors to deal with all kinds of people, she made up her mind to become a doctor and of service to them in the name of God.  Ms. Ida realized that God had convinced her to pursue the line of medical missionary as her parents and grand parents were. ''Service to the poor and needy women is service to God'' be came her primary goal.  Her missionary zeal  and her interest in the health care of the women in particular,  were  instrumental in starting one of the most foremost medical colleges in S.E Asia in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. The Reformed Church in America gave her solid support to accomplish her dream.

Her missionary work  led  her to remain single and she never got married. Having graduated from Cornell Medical College, New York City in 1899, she landed in India with funds donated by a banker in his wife's memory.  with  $10,000 grant from a Mr. Schell, a Manhattan banker, she started a small  medical dispensary and clinic for women at Vellore (now a city),  75 miles from Madras. In 1900, her hailing father died. In a span of a couple of years,  young Dr. Ida  Scudder treated 5000 patients.

This encouraged her to start  the Mary Taber Schell Hospital in 1902, however, she realized the inadequacy of qualified male/lady doctors to meet the demands of women. There was one doctor for 10000 people and to meet the short fall, she decided to open a Medical College to train Indian women in medicine. As the Indian women were conservative and not forward-looking then, her colleagues  at a Medical missionary Conference in Kodikanal, TN in 1911 were not in favor of her idea. Following year they gave her green signal. Undaunted as she was, she went ahead and started the Medical College  with 14 women enrolled for admission in 1918. The Reformed Church in America kept encouraging her endeavor by giving the needed support.  Dr Ida had to fight initially a lot to get the medical College going. Affiliation to a university, funds to run the college, etc haunted her and she solved them with patience. She got provisional affiliation to Madras university in 1941 and nine years later she got a permanent affiliation. Thanks to the efforts made by Dr. Lakshmana Swami Mudaliar.   Subsequently,  when the medical institution became co-educational several missions stepped in to give support  to the medical institution at Vellore.

Dr. Ida Scudder's  concept of Roadside clinics, a sort of Community and primary health care for interior rural areas  was a famous one and her innovative approach in those colonial days had been recently commended by the WHO - the World Heath organization. This unique program involved  a team of staff set out in a bullock-cart with adequate medical supplies. Their destination was near-by rural communities  to provide health care. Even now the College of Nursing  Community health  along with other sister units have been participating in Primary health Care and Community reach.

The medical College moved into a new location in 1928 and the campus came up on  200 acres (0.8 km²) at Bagayam and in the same year Mahatma Gandhiji visited the campus and praised the services of medical missionaries under Dr. Scudder. As for the founder, she did not sit idle, she toured the US often on fund-raising missions and brought in $ millions of dollars to develop the college. In 1945, the college was opened for both men and women.

The Vellore Christian Medical Center  in 2003 was the largest Christian hospital in the world, with 2000 beds, and its medical school is now one of the best  medical colleges in India. Dr. Ida in 1952 won the Elizabeth Blackwell Citation from the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, as one of 1952's five outstanding women doctors, an honor she well deserved.

She died, at the ripe age of 89, at her Hilltop bungalow having led a satisfied life, dedicating herself to the cause of Women's medical education and addressing women's medical problems.

Charles Tegart. The notorious British police officer   NoiseBreak

Sir Charles Augustus Tegart.  historyireland.com
Above image: Portrait of Tegart which once  hung in the office of the Director of the intelligence branch of the Bengal police................

Sir Charles Augustus Tegart KCIE KPM (1881 – 6 April 1946) was a British colonial police officer in India and Mandatory Palestine (a geopolitical entity as part of partition of the Ottoman Empire in the region of Palestine under the terms of British mandate for Palestine)  and had a name for instilling fear among the Indian natives. He was more known for his notoriety for his brutality and use of torture in dealing with victims than for his integrity in his official work.   He was known to be ruthless and "uncompromising with detainees". His expertise in torture  and brute forces was at full display in the later part of 1930s  when he was with  the British Mandate of Palestine. - "Tegart forts", reinforced concrete police stations and posts  were quite well-known . His forte was  brutal questioning accompanied by beating prisoners on the soles of their feet, causing severe pain. Simply speaking, he was a ruthless a Devil in  Police Uniform.

Born in Derry, county Londonderry Sir Charles Tegart KCIE and KIPM in 1881, the son of a Church of Ireland clergyman, Rev. Joseph Poulter Tegart of Dunboyne, County Meath, was educated at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen and briefly at Trinity College, Dublin.  Joined the Calcutta Police in 1901,  Tegart became the  head of its Detective Department and had  served almost continuously in Calcutta for a period of thirty years until he was appointed a member of the Secretary of State's Indian Council in December 1931. In 1924, the Caledonian Society of Calcutta honored one of the most loyal servants of the British Raj, Charles Augustus Tegart,  who was acclaimed as the most famous policeman of British India but a hated villain to Bengali revolutionary nationalists for his intelligence work against their cause.  Tegart joined  the newly-established intelligence branch of the Bengal police that tracked  lots of revolutionaries  and led to large-scale detentions and deportations of suspected terrorists under the 1915  Defence  Act of India Act. In 1917 Tegart served as one of the principal advisors to the Rowlatt Committee, which was investigating ‘revolutionary crime’ in India. He took the credit of being the first officer of the Indian Police (IP) and  on his recommendation, the Special Branch was created to deal with hard core criminals- revolutionaries, etc.

Above image:  Sir Charles Tegart presenting special medals to police officers in Calcutta during the 'civil disobedience' rioting encouraged by Gandhi's .........
He became the Superintendent of Police in 1908, and received  the King's Police Medal in 1911. Through devotion to duty and ruthless dealing with  criminal, his promotion was quick and he came  Commissioner of Calcutta Police from 1923 to 1931.  It was natural he earned the ire of the Bengali patriots and anti-British activists  who fought for Indian  independence.  His actions were quite menacing and formed a huge road block for the revolutionaries. He gave a tough time to patriots led by Jatindranath Mukherjee at Balasore in Orissa on 9 September 1915.

That Tegart  is said to have survived six assassination attempts in India is a tell-tale story of his notoriety and repressive brutality in dealing with natives and their demand for freedom. Undeterred by several attempts on his life, not withstanding danger to his life, he had the audacity and guts  to drive around in an open-top car with his Staffordshire Bull Terrier riding on the bonnet as if the critter was his main body guard.  He was awarded the KCIE in 1937 and Lord Lytton, then Governor of Bengal was in full-praise of him for his serious efforts to curb  freedom activities
Among attempts on his life, the following are quite note-worthy:  An abortive attempt on Tegart on  12 January 1924, at Chowringhee Road in Calcutta, by Gopinath Saha, a Bengali revolutionist, who accidentally  shot down a white man, Mr. Ernest Day,  mistaking him for Tegart.  In yet another incident on  25 August 1930, at Dalhousie Square in Calcutta,  a bomb  was lobbed into the car in which Tegart was traveling, but Tegart shot down the revolutionary and escaped unhurt.

Besides, earlier  Tegart had got a name as one of the leading intelligence officers in the British Empire. After the  WWI  he was stationed in France and England where, according to The Englishman, a newspaper of Calcutta, Tegart is said to have made valuable contribution to the counter-espionage work against the Bolsheviks’. Naturally, he was chosen  as an intelligence officer in Ireland during the Anglo-Irish War from July to November 1920. He was  one  among several Indian police officers  brought in to beef-up  British intelligence networks. In course of time, he became an expert on both 'Irish and Bengali ‘terrorism’ that became a major preoccupation of the British Empire.  An interesting story about him was he could go around Calcutta using various disguises  to pass off as a native Bengali in spite of his strong European features. To gather intelligence on freedom fighters he once entered a Red Light area in the guise of a Bengali gentleman, talking with pimps and prostitutes with support from native officers.
His expertise in terror tactics drew the attention of the British authorities who  sent him to the British Mandate of Palestine, then in the midst of Arab Revolt. He was there  to advise the Inspector General on matters of security.  Upon his arrival  in December 1937, he recommended the  construction of 77 reinforced concrete police stations and posts  to safeguard any  ferocious attack and control  the movement of insurgents, goods and weapons along the northern border of Palestine   On his recommendations  were built   new "Tegart forts", as they came to be referred to  throughout Palestine;  many were built  after the Arab Revolt, in 1940-41. A few surviving ones are  being used by Israeli and Palestinian    forces.  In 1942 Tegart headed  operations at the Ministry of Food in wartime Britain to combat the black market which affected the economy of England during that crucial period.Tegart died in April 1946 at his home of age-related disease.

Patriot Gopinath Saha and his abortive attempt on Police officer Charles Tegart - British India

$

Despite the availability of several books on the violence, killing, mayhem and looting committed by the British in India,  the myth that  India got her freedom with least bloodshed is prevalent in a section of  Indian population. It is absolutely not true and the British rulers under 'the rip-off company' called East India co  and later under the direct Crown Administration  were ruthless, busy robbing the country till the left the Indian shores. Countless were the young Indians who wanted India to be a free  land and in the process lost their precious lives. Among them, Bengal accounts for a large number of young people who fought valiantly against the unjust British.  From 1906 until 1935, the Bengal police intelligence branch recorded a total of over 500 ‘revolutionary crimes’  related to freedom in the province.  The Anglo-Indian population in early 1900s  was living in perpetual fear on account of individual terrorist activities.

The Bengal Criminal Law Amendment Ordinance of 1924, enacted into law as Bengal Criminal Law Amendment Act in 1925, in Bengal, British India. The law was implemented to cut down the rise in revolutionary terrorism by the Jugantar group against The Raj in Bengal after 1922.  The Jallianwalla Bagh Massacre perpetrated by Gen. Dyer put the entire Indian population in rage.
The Nonviolent movement lost its sheen as the British did not respect Gandhiji's ethical and moral protests.  The Anushilan Samiti  took the reigns  and became reformed under the leadership of Surya Sen, Hem Chandra Kanungo and Bhupendranath Dutta. Having no course, they  re-engaged in in terrorist activities against the Raj.  This led to a string of violence through 1923 saw murders of police witnesses and informers, culminating in the attempt to assassinate Charles Tegart by Gopinath Saha. leading to the mistaken killing of another European.  Soon the ordinance was enacted extending the extraordinary powers of the Regulation III of 1818.  It removed rights of Habeas corpus, reintroduced measures of indefinite and arbitrary detentions, and trials by tribunal without jury and without right of appeal. The ordinance was enacted into law in 1925 (as mentioned before) and remained in force for 5 years. Almost One hundred and fifty people were detained under the law, including among the notable detainees Subhas Chandra Bose, later Congress leader. The act was re-enacted in 1930, and later formed a basis for the Burma Criminal Law Amendment in 1931.
The early  Indian History books either have given least exposure to certain revolutionaries of  late 19th century or early 20th century or simply over looked their patriotic zeal and sacrifices. Consequently, these courageous people died either unsung or in obscurity.
Gopinath Saha. Indian Philately
Gopinath Saha (1906-1924), a Bengali freedom fighter associated with  the Hindustan Republican Association,  on 12 January 1924, attempted to assassinate Charles Tegart,  then head of the Detective Department of Calcutta Police.  Gopinath Saha, was born in the village Baghanchra, Santipur, Dist. Nadia, West Bengal. When he grew up to be an adult, ignited by patriotism, he wanted to see India as a free land and joined the freedom movement in Bengal. He became an active member oftheHindustan Republican Association founded in Delhi by Sachindra Nath Sanyal, Bagat Singh, Chandrasekar Azad,  Sukhdev Thapar, et al. Disillusioned with Gandhiji's Satyagrapha and non-violence as a means to get freedom, these patriotic people decided that the British rulers, cunning as they were,  not inclined to make India  a free country and the only way to make them understand our yearning for freedom was through terrorist activities. These violent acts would get international attention and other countries would get an impression that there was something 'rotten in the British administration' in India.

Netaji S.C.Bose Dgreetings
Police officer Tegart was  closely tracking  freedom fighters in Bengal and keeping  a check on them so the revolutionaries could not carry on their ant-British activities without getting his attention. Charles Augustus Tegart, KCIE, KPM  (1881 - 6 April 1946), was a colonial police officer in India and 'mandatory Palestine'. He  was held in great esteem by the British for his  efficiency in dealing with criminals with brute and repressive  forces and  notoriety. His forte was using  various torture methods to extract information from the victims. He was often known to be "ruthless and uncompromising with detainees''. Consequently, he instilled fear among the Bengal freedom fighters.

Gopinath Saga underwent torture in Presidency jail, Calcutta  where many freedom fighters like Sri Arabindo underwent imprisonment.  Since Charles Tegart was a menace to the Indian freedom fighters, they decided to get rid of him for good. The task was given to Saha  to finish off Tegart at the right opportunity. Unfortunately,  Saha could make only an abortive attempt, having failed to kill  Police officer Tegart as planned before.  Instead, he accidentally  killed Ernest Day,  a white civilian who had gone there on official business. Saha never thought that an innocent man would get caught in the firing line. Saha was arrested and  tried for murder and other anti - British activities.  In March 1924, he was  hanged to death in the Presidency Jail where other leaders were also hanged to death.   Next month we will be celebrating India's 71 'Independence Day',  but for great martyrs like  Gopinath Saha, Bagat Singh, Chandrasekar Azad,  Sukhdev Thapar, Vanchinathan and others who gave their lives for Free India  we won't be enjoying our freedom to day. It is our fundamental duty to remember every patriotic Indian executed by the Colonial British government who added insult to injury by finally leaving the shores of India after prolonged freedom struggle and dividing into two different nations - India and Pakistan, the latter was created based on religion.

Consecration of Khasi Visvanath temple, Varanasi, a daunting task well done by a devotee from Chettinad, Tamil Nadu

Golden Temple (Kashi Vishwanath) (Varanasi, India)www.tripadvisor.in
Kashi / Varanasi in UP, North India  is believed to be one of the few  oldest living cities  in the world as cited by  ancient Sanskrit literature for its 3500 year history.  Kashi Viswanathar temple  is the foremost holiest temple in India and every day tens of thousands of pilgrims arrive here from across India   to worship the presiding  deity and to perform ''Thithi'' or Shartham in memory of their fore fathers.  The first Jyotirlinga is said to have been appeared out  of the earth's crust here and flared towards heavens in the form of a huge column of Agni (fire) as God Shiva manifested his supremacy. The famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple was built here and it remains  a center of  Saivaism  - people who worship the cosmic dancer as the primary God. Vishvanatha or Vishveshwara - meaning the ruler of the Universe.

The  Kasi Viswanatha temple, heavily damaged several times in the past by the Muslim invaders from MW, was again destroyed in 1669 by Aurangzeb, the most treacherous Mogul ruler of Delhi (who killed his own brothers, imprisoned his sick father) and remnants of it can be seen behind the Gyanvapi mosque. During the reign of Mogul ruler Akbar, the present temple  was built by Ahalya Bai of Indore in 1776. The consecration was done in 1780 in a simple manner. The Indore rulers were great patrons of this temple  and is situated on  the premises of Banaras Hindu University and managed by the Birlas. The unique  Sivalinga,  60 cm tall and 90 cm in circumference, is made of black stone and is housed in an altar made of silver. The unique feature is gold plated sanctum and 15.5 meter high gold spire and gold dome. There are three domes each made up of pure gold!!  The temple (Shri Vishwanath Mandir) was finally completed in 1966.

Recently, I read  an interesting article in The Hindu of 27 July 2018 by Geetha Venkatramanan on the recent  Maha-kumbabishekam of Sri Vishvanath Temple at Varanasi.  That it was done  after 238  long years  was a surprise news to me. In most South Indian Hindu temples in India and  around the world, Kumbhabhishekam, or the temple's consecration ceremony, is done once every 12 years. It is usually done to purify the temple after a renovation or simply done to renew the purity of the temple. Hindus celebrate this event on the consecration day as the witnessing gives  a thousand "punya" or good karma.  Normally, in all temples of Tamil Nadu, on completion of every  twelve years or more, consecration is  done  at any cost with a view to re-energizing the presiding deity and to maintain the sanctity of the holy shrine. Consecration of the temple  is normally done along with white-washing,  repair works, etc.

What has puzzled me is that since the very first consecration of Visvanath temple,  all these years why is  consecration of this very important Hindu  temple not done so far? Yet another unbelievable fact is  in this part of Varanasi  how come no person associated with the temple management  has any  idea about Kumbabishekam that has to be done peridically?  It seems that  Why is it done?and how is it done? are not clearly understood here. Does it mean temple priests and pundits associated with  this popular temple have no knowledge of Hindu temple traditions and Agama Sastras?

The recent consecration of Khasi Visvanath temple was held on the 5th July 2018 under the expert care of one Subbu sundaram, from a prominent Nattukottai Chettiar business community.  Shri Kashi Vishvanath Temple Trust  announced Mr. Subbu was the  Convenor for the consecration. Normally Nagarathars, as they are locally  known, are ardent devotees of Lord Shiva and their common trait is'whatever they do, they do it right with meticulous care'. Their monetary contribution to Hindu temples in Tamil Nadu  is vast. Their community manages 7 rich temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and others in Nattukottai. Being quite familiar with the Hindu temple traditions and related rituals, etc., his rich experience stood him in good stead and  he successfully presided over the consecration

process. It is a great honor that a person from Tamil Nadu was entrusted with such a holy undertaking. Mr. Subbu got full cooperation from the various authorities,  including Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust  in Varanasi. Right from Ganapathi Homam to construction of scaffolding close to the tower with a platform for performing puja, to the Kumbha (kalasam)  and to making arrangement for Yagasala, etc.,  it was a daunting task. Fifty priests from Tamil Nadu coordinated with the local priests and  took care of everything associated with Kumbabisekam, including collecting holy Ganga water in pots to be placed in Yagasala (later to be poured  over the Kumbam on the Shikara), chanting of various mantras, etc.  They all did a free service  to the deity here. As part of this great event the authorities, at last,  allowed 150 coconuts (after scanning them for security reason) to be used for Puja, etc., for the first time. They are essential items for puja and consecration.

Mr Subbu, his wife and family members  from Tamil Nadu were really fortunate that the consecration  of such a famous temple as Kasi Visvanath temple, Varanasi had  to be done under the guidance of their family head  Mr, Subbu and, indeed, it was a divine dispensation and being humble devotees, they deserve this great honor. So are the people associated with them to make this holy event a successful one.

Lord Shiva in the form of a pillar of fire (Agni)The Hindu FAQ
Shiva as a pillar of fire. Jai Shiva Shankar - Tumblr
Above image: Lord Shiva in the form of a  huge column of fire. Brahma taking the form of a bird (hamsa) to reach the crown and Lord Vishnu taking the form of Varaha (boar) to see the bottom (pathal) ............
Believed to be one of the most ancient towns of India, Kashi, a revered place, is the most popular pilgrimage center in India. It is at the confluence of the Varuna and Asi rivulets with the holy river Ganges. This place is so sacred, it is mentioned in the Skanda Purana, an ancient Hindu scripture. The famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva  is steeped in history  and has been around for centuries. The presiding deity is in the form of ''Linga''and is enshrined in the Garbagraha / sanctum. This city is visited by Hindus in thousands on any given  day and they never fail to do Thithi or Shardham for their fore-fathers (pithroos).

It was in this place Jyotirlinga is said to have  appeared out  of the earth's crust here and flared towards heavens in the form of a huge column of Agni (fire) as Shiva manifested his supremacy. So, among the Jyotirlinga shrines Kasi Visvanath temple is the foremost one. This temple's consecration was done on 5 July 2018 for the first time ever after a gap of more than two centuries. Rani  Ahilya Bai Holkar of Indore in 1780 built this temple. This popular temple was destroyed by some fanatic Muslim rulers originally from NW of India.  Tradition has it that here Lord Shiva is all pervasive  and benevolent and free the humans, who spend the last part of their lives here, from the cycles of birth and death. They can attain Moksha (heaven) or Mukti (salvation) by staying in Khasi. It means there will be no rebirth on this earth, free from Samsara Bandham (family ties / Commitments) and sinful people on this earth.
There is no Hindu temple that does not have a sthala purana - a legend closely linked to the temple. This place has an interesting legend:   According toŚiva Mahāpurāṇa  one fine day Lord Brahma, the Trinity God in the Hindu pantheon in charge of 'Creation'and LordVishnu, another Trinity God in charge of protection and sustenance on earth  had a  heated argument over their supremacy and  creative powers.  Both of them,  after a long session
of debate, decided to approach Lord Shiva for his council  and judgement to decide which one of them was  superior in terms of divine and mystical powers. Having heard their unending debate, Lord Shiva took the form of a huge infinite column of fire  - Agni covering the three worlds - Akash (sky), Boomi (earth) and Pathal(nether world). He appeared in Jyotisorupam- an endless pillar of light, shining and resplendent.
Thazhampoo  ( screw pine)Madraasi - a tamilian tales
Lord Shiva asked Brahma to find his Crown (Sirasu) in the pillar of fire and Lord Vishnu the bottom (end /patham). Whoever comes first after noticing my crown  and feet will be the winner. Brahma took the form of a bird (hamsa) and tried to see Shiva's crown. Several days went by and, at last, he saw leaves of Thazhambu flower floating down. Brahma asked Thazhambu flower (screw pine) about Shiva's crown. It said I had been floating downward for a pretty long time so it would be difficult for you  to see Shiva's crown. Realizing his endeavor would end in failure, Brahma asked the flower to give a false statement  to Lord Shiva by lying that he saw Brahma reaching  Shiva's crown. The flower finally agreed  to  support Brahma. In the mean time, Lord Vishnu who took the form of a Varaha (boar)  and tried to reach the pathal loka to see the bottom of the light.  Realizing it was an impossible task, he gave up his attempt midway, got back to Shiva and accepted his inability to see the bottom of the fire.  Brahma, now approached  Shiva and told him  that he saw his Crown and his witness was Thazhambu flower.

Upon hearing this whooping lie from  God Brahma, Lord Shiva could not contain his rage and cursed Brahma  for uttering falsehood. He said there would be a few temples on earth dedicated to lord Brahma.  People will never worship him.  Being a god Brahma failed to uphold the truth and was not worthy of worship. As for the flower Tazhampoo  that gave a false witness for Brahma,

Lord Shiva said that the flower would be unfit for worship of gods, in particular, Shiva.   Lord Shiva was  in praise  of Vishnu and  said that his temples would be revered  and flourished across India. The motto behind this legend is: "Arrogance and ego will take us to the path of ruin, whereas humility and contended life will put us on the path to success and happiness".

Leaning Hindu temple, Huma, Odisha, India munnabbsr - WordPress.com

Since our  high school days we have read and heard about the famous “Leaning Tower of Pisa” in Italy. Have you ever heard about a leaning tower (Gopuram) of a Hindu temple in India? You will be surprised to know that  there is a unique temple about 23 km  away from Sambalpur in Huma village on  the banks of River Mahanadi.  This Hindu temple with a leaning tower is quite popular and the presiding deity is Lord Shiva.  Temple is dedicated to Baba Bimleswar - Lord Shiva and  was built by Raja Balaram Deb,1st king of Sambalpur. This is one of the two leaning temples in the world and lots of tourists come here.

Unlike the Pisa Leaning Tower, here the temple tower is not a tall. Nor is it architecturally rich and impressive; but, it is simplicity personified. As for the origin of tilting of temple tower, it has been a bone of contention among the scholars.   It is not known if this leaning structure was built this way. While the edifice leans toward the river side, the pinnacle of the temple is perpendicular to the ground - towards the opposite direction of the main temple.  The crux of the matter is Why was the main one tilting toward one side and the other in the opposite direction? Was it a technical error or purposely it was built that way? Raja Balaram Deb built many temples in Odisha . None of them have this kind of peculiar design.

Leaning Hindu temple, Huma, Odisha, wanderndiscover-WordPress.com
Besides the main temple, the Bhairavi Devi temple is  to the left of the main temple and Bhairo temple is  to the right of the main temple. Historical records point out it was  Ganga Vamsi Emperor Anangabhima Deva-III  who built this temple.  Later it was rebuilt or renovated by King Baliar Singh (1660–1690 A.D.), the fifth Chauhan king of Sambalpur. The rest of the temples were built during the reign of  King Ajit Singh (1766–1788 A.D.) of Sambalpur

The legend has it in the place where the temple stands now, long long ago  a cow used to come to the spot regularly and had let her milk flow on the rock outcrop. The milk would disappear soon. People living nearby saw this cow  almost daily offering the milk to the rock outcrop. People soon attached divinity to it and ultimately a temple came up right on this spot.

Yet another legend has it that  a milkman  began to worship the rock - idol from where he used to  cross the River Mahanadi every day. He  offered a large measure of milk on the rock and soon it would disappear;  presumably consumed by the idol underneath? Suspecting divinity, he informed the local villagers and this led the rulers of this region to have a temple built  dedicated to Lord Shiva.

'The temple is built on  the rock outcrop adjacent to  the bank of the river Mahanadi.  The temple is made of limestone and others. Experts believe the leaning was  not deliberate  and it was a flawless construction technically speaking.  The cause of leaning could be  due to subsurface  displacement of the rock formation  triggered by localized minor tremors. Flood currents from the Mahanadi  would not have caused the tilting, rather it would have caused some damages to the structure. The tilting of other structures in the opposite direction  is a mysterious one and it could be due to the direction of propagation of  earthquake waves in that particular direction.  This suggests this place experienced tremors on two occasions.  The first tremors caused the tilting of the edify toward the river. The second  one caused tilting perpendicular to the first one.

One interesting fact is all the structures within the temple complex are found in tilted condition, including the boundaries. But the angle of inclination  has not changed in the last  40/50 years as  confirmed by the villagers and priests. The reason  for the tilt could be more due to  geological process   rather than structural or design flaw. That the plinth of the temple has deviated slightly from its original arrangement (consequently the body of the temple has tilted) suggests positive shift of the ground, presumably caused by minor tremors.  If there were major tremors, the entire temple structure would have fallen down and severely damaged.
Friendly Kudo fish, Mahanadi, Odisha, India Wilderness Tales from Odisha
Shivaratri is a major festival at this temple. the draws a lot of devotees to this place.  On the night of Shivratri in March every year, an  annual fair takes place at the foothill of the temple. The Government of Odisha has proposed a hanging bridge to attract more tourists to the annual fair. There is a special type of fish found here known as 'Kudo' fish and they grow up to six feet and are friendly. They are frequently fed by visitors.

Leaning Tower of Pisa in 2004 en.wikipedia.org
Above image: The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italian: Torre pendente di Pisa) or simply the Tower of Pisa is the freestanding bell tower of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa, known worldwide for its unintended tilt. The tower is situated behind the Pisa Cathedral.
The tower's tilt began  in the 12th century when construction was on, caused by poor foundation on ground  made of loose soil.  The tilt gradually increased over a period  before the work was completed in  the 14th century.  The tilt was partially corrected and stabilized  in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The height of the tower is 55.86 meters (183.27 feet) from the ground on the low side and 56.67 meters (185.93 feet) on the high side The width of the walls at the base is 2.44 m (8 ft 0.06 in). Its weight is estimated at 14,500 metric tons (16,000 short tons). Prior to restoration work undertaken between 1990 and 2001, the tower leaned at an angle of 5.5 degrees The architect is believed to be Bonanno Pisano, a well-known 12th-century resident artist of Pisa (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaning_Tower_of_Pisa)

Patriot Hari Kishan Talwar was hanged to death by the British - Colonial India

Hari Kishan Talwar. shibham.wordpress.com
India witnessed a tumultuous period when the freedom struggle was going on. Centuries of exploitation of Indian resources, Indian people and squandering of Indian wealth to build Britain and its  and empire made the Indian natives furious and drove them to the fag end of their tolerance. On one hand, Gandhiji's tirade against the British oppressive rule  through non-violence did not pay enough dividends. On the other hand, the colonial rulers stuck to their barrel, taking away as much as they could from the Indian subcontinent. They knew very well that one day they had to leave India for good and that time is not far enough. It could be a few decades from now, so  'Squander as much as you can''became their motto.
Great patriot Subash Chandra Bose. nayichetana.com
Across many Indian states certain groups of young people driven by patriotism thought violence was a way to get freedom and enjoy the trapping of a 'Free Land'. Though they knew that violence begets violence and it won't produce immediate results, what they wanted was to get the attention of the British government in London. The ball was in their court with respect to India's freedom. In those days Both Punjab and Bengal were in the forefront, besides Maharashtra in freedom struggle and these regions produced lots of revolutionaries who wanted the foreign rulers to leave the country soon. Many of these patriots who committed violence against the British officials were caught and finally put to death.  Hari Kishan Talwar was one among the revolutionaries who gave his life so that India would get freedom soon.

Born  in January 1908 in a small village  Galladher, Distt.  Mardan   of Punjab (now in Khyber Pakhtunwa province of Pakistan), Hari  Krishan Talwar was a patriot.  His father was Gurdas Ram Talwar, a rich and influential personality. When he became an adult  Hari Kishan was keenly watching how the Indians were struggling  with the colonial rulers to get a free land. Very much disillusioned with the oppressive British rule under the Crown, Hari Talwar became a revolutionary. The trails of Bhagat Singh and others in the Lahore conspiracy case and the trial of Ram Prasad Bismil and Asfaqulla in Kakori  Conspiracy case  were  quite sensational that drew the Indian  media as well as the global media. The long trials and the death sentences pronounced on the accused   had a lasting impact on the youth .  With proper training in handling gun and other fire arms, he made up his mind to shoot to death a high  British official. On 22  December1930,  young Hari Krishan  made an attempt on Governor of Punjab Geoffrey de Montmorrency (an Angelo -Irish administrator) when he was coming out from Lahore University hall after delivering the convocation address. His shots injured him and a police officer Chanan Singh was killed. Later he was arrested and hanged on 9 June, 1931 at Mianwali jail, West Punjab (Pakistan). While  in police custody, he was tortured by the jail authorities. Patriot  Bhagat Singh, while in jail wrote two letters to his unnamed contact regarding Hari Kishan's trial. But the letters  written  in June 1931 did not reach the contact, may be they were  suppressed. Bhagat Singh was not happy with defense lawyer's advice to Hari Kishnan in the trial  His lawyer Sh. Asaf Ali was demanding high fees for defending revolutionaries.  Hari Kishan's father stood by his son and  was dragged into the picture and the police purposely framed up several cases against him. Grief-stricken and broken-hearted, he died 25 days after his son's  martyrdom.  It is said that one of his brothers

Bhagat Ram Talwar  was instrumental in helping Subhash Chander Bose  slip away through Khyber pass in the guise of Pathan.   Months later Chandra Bose took over as Supreme Commander of Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) in Singapore.

The shooting incident  at Lahore took place as follows:

''An attempt was made to assassinate Sir Geoffrey de Montmorency, thebGovernor of Punjab, this afternoon,as he was leaving the Punjab University Hall, Lahore, after a convocation. Six shots were fired near the gate. The Governor escaped serious injury, but Sardar Chañan Singh (sub inspector of police) was shot in his
arm. It appears that when the convocation was concluded members of the University Senate and the syndicate escorted the Governor to his car. As the procession  reached the gate, a youth, who appeared to be a Punjabi Hindu, whipped a revolver from his pocket and fired six shots in rapid succession. Two struck the Governor, one in the back above the left hip,and the other in the left arm. Another shot hit Sardar Singh, a police inspector, passing through his neck. Another police officer and a woman doctor were wounded. The Governor was Immediately conveyed to Government House, and the other injured persons to hospital. Singh's condition15 reported to be grave. Mr. Neal, Assistant Superintendent  of Police, rushed forward, and caught one of the assailants as, it is alleged,he was in the act of firing a revolver. Another Punjabi, who dashed forward, was also overpowered. The University Hall was Immediately cleared, and police, forming a cordon, searched the building.''
